Apollo always wants to take us on a tour through his village, Ndegeya. This is the place where most of the activities of the Joanne Foundation take place. It is quite a vast area and the small cottages are sometimes difficult to reach. Thanks to our driver Henry we were able to visit those families we really needed to see. We were happy to hear that the families were very happy with the seventeen latrines that were built during the past few months.

According to nurse Kakande the cases of diarrhea and other diseases related to bad sanitary conditions have fallen sharply in the past few months. But installing latrines is not enough. Kakande has instructed the villagers that washing their hands after using the toilet is very important. The villagers have found an ingenious solution for this . They made a very simple construction of some branches and a small jerrycan sothat people can wash their hands without touching anything

Besides visiting the new latrines, we also went to a few waterpumps which the Joanne Foundation had installed last year. They are in perfect working order thanks to good maintenance: the pumps supply crystal clear water. Monthly the villagers have to pay a very small amount of money for using the pump and the money is used to pay for the maintenance of the pump which is done by the villagers themselves. Once a year the builder of the pumps comes for the major maintenance of the pumps.
By installing the latrines and waterpumps the Joanne Foundation has contributed to the prevention of deseases and a better healthcare for the villagers of Ndegeya.
